Heavy Events
International Heavy Event Athletes contest the coveted Cowal Championships on both days. As well as the spectacular Caber Toss, other disciplines include Putting the Weight and the Shot for Height and for Distance, and the traditional Scottish Hammer Throw.
The Cowal Stone

The Cowal Stone is a new and rare find by Heavy Athletics Convener, George Spence. George has been combing the beaches of the Clyde Coast for many years for a suitable stone and two years ago he came across a beautifully naturally formed one, which he deemed ideal to introduce as The Stone for use at Cowal.
Weighing in at around 32lb, this stone is considerably heavier than the recognised weight of 16lb for Championship records. However, rather than change what has been formed naturally, George has decided that it should be used in its present state.
Probably the most famous stone is The Braemar Stone, found in the River Dee weighing around 22lb and used at the Braemar Gathering each year. Although it again exceeds the recognised weight, its uniqueness in itself makes the breaking of local records attractive and a challenge each year.
